CHARA: Cloudskipper TAGS:lumiNOTES: Excited to get back into this cute pair WORDCOUNT: 256
“It’s just up ahead, I think,” Cloudskipper said as he avoided rocks and divots in the muddy ground. The river rushed past them to their right, and he knew soon it would tumble down a steep ledge into the beautiful blue pools below. He periodically looked back at Izzy, who he had insisted walk behind him until they found the cliff edge, lest one or both of them fall. He could scarcely believe it had been almost a year and half since they first met. They had overwintered in the desert, avoiding the herd of Santheo to the best of their abilities, and now they followed the river south again. Just ahead, the sound of water turned to crashing as it disappeared over the edge. Bushes and trees rooted even on the precipice, barring his sight. His ears perked up and he picked up his pace, despite his shoulder nagging him. “Here we are! I’ve only been here once before but.. It’s so beautiful,” he called back to her. He turned left and saw the well-worn path carved down the hill. The view was nothing from here. He wanted to show Izadora the waterfall from below, and the clear blue pool that it fed into. “Be careful going down. It can get slippery.” Cloudskipper’s hooves skidded in the mud, unsteady as he tottered down toward the basin. Already he could see the glittering pool, and the wall of white water pouring down the rocks above. He glanced back once more to see if she was following.
A soft smile curved up the corners of the mares lips, a blossom of warm affection welling within her chest. Izzy couldn't help herself when it came to the stallion. Her heart fluttered and became a flustered, nervous mess whenever their gazes met. It didn't matter that they'd been together for just shy of two years, Cloudskipper had wrapped himself so firmly in Izzy's life and heart she couldn't imagine him not being there. It felt as if the day had only been yesterday when the two had met and begun their travels shortly afterward. How had time passed so quickly?
Izzy's hooves clip clopped against the muddy, rocky terrain while her gaze traveled up to meet his, her heartbeat accelerating. "I'm being careful." She was quick to offer her reassurance, taking a step closer to gently press her muzzle against his hip. "Are YOU doing okay? I know this weather isn't helping much with your shoulder. Don't forget we can take however many breaks until we reach the bottom." Izzy pulled away to sweep her blue gaze over his frame, her tone holding a subtle undertone of worry. "The view wouldn't be nearly as lovely if I didn't have you to see it with, Cloud. I'm just happy to share this journey with you."
“I’ll be careful. We’re almost to the bottom, I promise, and then we’ll take a long break,” Cloudskipper said over his shoulder. His heart pounded in his chest, and not just from anxiety as he trotted over the uneven ground. He felt his face warm as he responded to Izzy.
Even still he slipped and skidded awkwardly down the rest of the way until his hooves touched grass once more. He spun around and waited eagerly for her to join him. His breath caught as he saw her in the light of summer once more. The dappled sunlight made her glow between patches of shade.
“We can take plenty of breaks here, and even swim!” He gestured to the rippling pool of water behind him. Despite the water rushing down from above the bottom was visible, flashes of silver and black fish darting through the water. A few fallen logs crossed the muddy bottom as well, though he knew from experience they were much deeper than they appeared to be. And cascading down the cliffs, sun-lit water formed white sheets as they fell into the water below.
He raised his leg to take the pressure off as he stood. He longed to dive headfirst into the water, but he wanted to have the grand reveal first.
“What do you think?” He waited with baited breath, his eyes bright as he looked to her.
Alarm swelled into irrational fear seeing the stallion slip and skid down the path. No! What if he got hurt?! Izzy surged forward grabbing a mouthful of his tail in an attempt to slow his descent, but only succeeded in doing the same thing. Smacking into his hind quarters the mare's fear vanished as quickly as the mist from the falls did, only to be replaced with hot embarrassment. He was fine. She was fine. They were both fine. Heat flushed beneath her skin as she hurriedly released his tail feeling more than a little silly. Shuffling around to be beside him Izzy shoved her embarrassment aside, attention now glued to the scenery before her.
"Wow..." She breathed, tone awestruck and head slowly turning to soak in any and everything surrounding them. "I knew to expect it to be beautiful, but I wasn't prepared for this. It's..." Izzy slowly slid her gaze to Cloudskipper struggling to find the right words. "I don't think 'beautiful' can give this place the justice it deserves, but it truly is. I've never seen anywhere as lovely as here. It's like a real life fairy tale!" Izzy moved to peer into the reflective water feeling like a foal seeing the world for the first time. "Thank you." A smile had blossomed across the mare's muzzle, her form moving to stand by Cloudskipper's side once more, head pressed gently to his. "I'm glad we made the trip here. The journey was definitely worth the trek."
Cloudskipper leaned into Izadora, taking the weight off of his leg and curling his neck around hers. His eyelids fluttered and he shuddered with a deep, content sigh. There was awe and adoration in his own eyes, his gaze turned from the view to his traveling partner.
"I wanted to show you this place the most. I mean, the sunsets on the beach are unmatched, but the falls-- they remind me of you, your beauty," he said. The buckskin stallion nosed her cascading blonde mane affectionately. "We've seen so much of these lands together already. The sights I have seen with you have been made all the more sweeter with your presence. I speak not just about your appearance, but... Izzy you are an incredible mare. An incredible horse! I don't know how to say this..."
Cloudskipper paused for breath. The anxiety welling in his chest would not be tamped down no matter how long he breathed though. He had to say it, or he feared he never would have the courage again. Looking at Izzy with a sincere and serious expression, he spoke.
"I love you, Izadora. You brought a brightness to my life I never expected to find, and I cannot thank you enough for it. I can only hope you will continue to shine radiantly beside me, and I long for that to be true." Cloudskipper looked away as the words left him in a rush.
He closed his eyes and turned to press his face against her neck. Her mane tickled his nose, but he did not care, only reveling in the warmth of her presence. He did not fear her response, only the potential change it would bring to their relationship.
Over a year of traveling and viewing the world in a new light with this beautiful horse beside him had changed him. He knew in his heart he could not return to life before Izzy.
He loved her? The words settled over her like warm honey, seeping through her skin and settling around her heart like a summer breeze. He loved her! Izzy felt as if her very soul was leaping and bounding for joy with his confession the words swirling and dancing through her head like butterflies. "You do? Truly?" The mares words were a soft whisper, but the happiness that he'd given her was palpable and clear with each word that passed her lips. Izzy leaned into him breathing in his familiar scent and burying her nose in his thick mane. For a few blissful moments she stayed still, soaking in the moment until eventually, she spoke once more.
"I have loved you for awhile now," The admittance was just as soft spoken as her previous words, but rang with clarity. "I kept quiet because I didn't want to risk ruining the friendship we'd developed through our travels. I couldn't bare the thought of separating from you if I'd gotten reckless and confessed only for you to not feel the same." A soft, breathy laugh escaped her then, a smile appearing on her lips. "I suppose looking back that might've been a little silly, but I'm glad I waited. I don't think I could be anymore happier than what you've made me right now."
Izzy gently rested her chin on his neck, feeling more serene and content than ever. "You are a gift to me, Cloudskipper. I adore you endlessly and I hope we can continue seeing this wide expanse of a world together." Izzy paused, as if debating to add further, then added in a rush. "Maybe...with more than just us two in the future?" Whether it was too soon to mention foals, she didn't know, but Izzy adored foals and had been dreaming of becoming a mother since she'd reached adulthood. If there was a possibility of Cloudskipper feeling the same she wanted to know, even if she had to wait a little longer to achieve her dream.
Hearing Izzy reciprocate his feelings sent a rush of joy through the stallion.
Cloudskipper couldn’t stop the intense emotions boiling up inside of him. A loud whinny erupted from his chest. He broke apart from Izadora and bounded across the grass. His back legs kicked in the air once he was sure he would not hit her by accident.
The sudden energy faded as quickly as it had come on. Soon he stood panting a few lengths from her, a wild grin on his face.
“I’m sorry. I just, you make me so happy too. Hearing you say those words. That you love me too.. That you would consider— with me? It feels almost impossible, though I don’t doubt the truth of your words for a second, Izzy,” he assured her. Cloudskipper trotted back to her with his tail high. He nuzzled her cheek with the grin still on his face.
“At this point, nothing could pull me away from your side. I will be here as long as you allow me, dear.”
He paused at the idea of expanding what they had. He had considered raising a foal with her, though he hadn’t the slightest clue about taking care of a child, nor had he been around many in his life. He would deny her nothing. If Izzy told him to steal all the stars in the sky, he would do so if only to see her smile.
“I would start a family with you Izadora, if you so desire. I may need instruction, but I will learn and go to any length to care for you and— and a little one.” He felt giddy once more hearing it from his own mouth. “A foal. Whenever you are ready for it I will be too. You need only say the word.”
His infectious energy caused a giggle to escape Izadora's lips, a sunny smile settling over her face. Today couldn't have gone anymore perfect even if her ancestors had blessed it themselves. Everything felt like it had fallen and clicked into place, all her previous troubles and tribulations felt like nothing now. She had found happiness and joy that couldn't simply be expressed with words, but neither of them really needed words to understand that. If only her mother could see her now and how far she'd come in the last year and a half.
"I love you." Pressing her nose against his Izzy's gaze softened with warm affection. "I'm so glad I met you when I did. You are the gift that keeps on giving and no words could ever express just how blessed you've made my life. I don't know much in regards to raising a foal either, but I know how my mother raised me and I think I turned out fairly well." Izzy gently bumped her head against his neck, nuzzling him with just as much affection. "It will be a learning experience for us both, but I know you'll be a wonderful father to any and all foals we have." Izzy glanced around them, studying the cascading waterfall and darting fish below the waters surface before her gaze slowly shifted back to Cloudskipper. "If...hypothetically...I said I was ready now..." Izzy trailed off carefully studying him to gouge his reaction. "That wouldn't be too soon, would it?"

Cloudskipper's eyes widened, but he didn't skip a beat. His tone was surprised but not judging. "Right now? Really? I mean of course, if you say you're ready, then yes. You know yourself best." He rested his chin on her back and closed his eyes.
"A new season of our life will begin soon. Whatever happens, we will do our best. I promise, I'll be by your side. Nothing matters more to me than keeping you safe and happy." A sudden fierceness entered his voice as he vowed to her, but then it turned tender once more as he nosed her flank. "And of course, our future foals."
He allowed himself to bask in this beautiful moment. Izzy was a firm and steady support for him, metaphorically and otherwise. He leaned on her just enough to relax his shoulder, his neck still curled around hers. Her sides rose and fell in a calm rhythm against his own body.
"If you're ready now, love, I am happy to oblige. You will make a wonderful mother. I know little of the mare that raised you, but I know that she did an incredible job. You will too," he murmured against her shoulder.
