ASAMI | THE SPIDER OF LAIPAWA

it had been a good few weeks since the initial injury, and every day the fire-clad mare got stronger. asami tended her wounds with care, and they talked. she had come to respect the other easily, noting her cunning smarts and discipline. it was no surprise that she had lead her own lands, and the spider admired that about her. she also saw the feeling of failure that hung over her, as if anyone truly had power of their own future. such a silly sentiment was always surprising to see, but she judged fia for it not. life was a fickle thing, wasn't it?

in no time and with much consideration between them, asami made the decision to ask fia to join her back on laipawa. unsure of how it would go, she prepared for the worst, but was utterly ( and pleasantly ) surprised when the other agreed. from there, they talked more, and the spider felt affirmed in her choice of recruit. she had a soft spot in her heart for many of her emissaries, and maybe it was simply because of the circumstances behind their meeting that made her elated at the thought of having such a powerful woman at her side on the islands.

a few days before they were ready to depart, asami looked upon her and said, "one last chance to say no before you belong to the islands, fia." the morning they were set to leave, the black capped mare sludged manuka honey along the faint scar left behind by the big cat one last time, beckoning her co pilot along as she headed for peregrine.

smiling toward her, asami whickered and stamped the cool sands when she crossed into the beach. it was high noon, and she knew they could beat the tides if they were quick enough; without another word, the spider headed for the waters, voice rippling on the wind. the excitement she felt to be going home mixed with a sense of accomplishment from her visit would carry her. plunging chest first into the waters, she made one quick glanced back to fia, a wicked grin spread across ashy lips.

It had been a hard few weeks but her wounds were starting to heal, she was starting to feel better; stronger and it was all because of Asami. She felt indebted to her, her fall from grace and who would come to her rescue but the Laipawa Spider. Strange that now when she looked upon her there was a spark inside her chest, a warmth that spread over her breast when Asami looked toward her. Was it gratitude or something different that she felt?

That morning, Asami asked if she had changed her mind if perhaps she wanted to remain here in the mainlands and Fia couldn’t fathom saying anything but a resounded ‘yes’. Why? Perhaps because Fia couldn’t see her life without Asami in it which was so odd considering they’d only just met. Their lives were entangled now, spirits that were teethed together through trauma.

At the sands, Asami was quivering with excitement, the lapping waters reaching like fingers toward her hooves. The Canyon has hot springs and lakes but none were as deep as the ocean before her now. Who knew what creatures lay beneath, waiting to pull her into the deep and drown her.

She looked at Asami and the grin across her maw and suddenly, her fear was whisked away, replaced instead but confidence that only the Spider could instill inside her.

Fia followed suit, dashing into the waves and feeling the cold about her breast, stamping away the urge to turn and flee back toward the mainland where she came. Instead, she confidently moved forward following Asami’s movements and aiming to cross the water with her new found friend.

With Asami's experience, it's no surprise that she and Fia are able to make this journey. Asami's knowledge of the channel, combined with relatively easy waters almost make this trip seem like a breeze. Though the saltwater stings Fia's wounds, it has little effect on her ability to swim - and the pair make their way to Aolani Cay with relative ease . . . however, the world they've come upon is far different than how Asami had left it. It may be wise to speak to an Oracle . . .
