CHARA: Cloudskipper TAGS:lumiNOTES: Open for others to join and meet Cloudskipper and Izzy WORDCOUNT: 259
With the sun beating down on his charcoal mane and buttermilk flank, Cloudskipper could almost imagine himself walking the swirling sands of the southern desert. Summer’s heat was intense after the cold, rainy spring. But he did not walk the stony dunes. Instead, he confidently strolled along the lush riverbank of the Inlus.
He and Izadora traveled south, following the river in hopes of reaching its mouth at the coast. The pair were now long past the forest where they had first met. Far ahead of them was the valley they would travel through soon. Next to them, the river flowed past softly, hardly making a whisper as it rushed downhill.
Tired and starting to ache in his shoulder, Cloudskipper came to a stop. Before Izzy got too far he said, “It’s hot out, and we’ve gotten quite far. Let’s rest for a bit. The river should be deep enough to swim in here, if you want to. I know I do.”
The stallion turned his head to the water. It ran clear by the edges, the current broken up by rocks to form calm pools. He leaned down and took a long drink. The cool liquid brought immense relief to his throat. Once he had quenched his thirst, he began to step into the water. His hooves splashed through the ripples. Swarms of tiny fish fled from his steps as he entered the river. Cloudskipper soon began to tread water as it rose above his chest. The weight off his leg made him sigh with relief.
Whirling around Izzy leaped within the cool depths sending mini waves at and over Cloudskipper as the champagne mare jumped and pranced about with the same energy of a foal. After all the traveling it was a relief to relax and escape the harsh rays of the summer sun. Even now, Izzy was proud of all the progress the two had made. Compared to the pine filled forests this was a place the mare could never tire of. After all, who could get sick of having access to fresh water not only for drinking, but swimming too!
"How is your shoulder faring? Are you still doing well?" With some of her boundless energy released Izzy waded over to check over the buttermilk buckskin, gently nosing at his shoulder. "If we're traveling at too fast of a pace I don't mind taking it slower to help ease whatever pain you may feel." The mare fretted, tossing her head to remove her soaked forelock out of her eyes. Occasionally Izzy forgot that the stallion couldn't move at the quickened pace she sometimes slipped into. Whenever she noticed the mare was quick to slow, but still she couldn't help the worry that plagued her.
Cloudskipper was invigorated watching Izzy frolic through the river. He swam after her deeper into the river and bobbed in the waves she left behind. He dunked his head underwater to shoo away the summer flies bothering his face. When he reared back to shake the water from his mane, he sent an arc of water into the air that splashed across the river’s surface.
Refreshed and cooled off, the stallion paddled toward Izzy with a renewed energy. He met her partway as she came to him.
“Tired, but not in much pain right now,” he replied. “Swimming is a good way to take some pressure off of the leg, and lets me stretch in a way I couldn’t on land. Thank you for being so mindful of it, Izzy. I promise I will let you know if I cannot keep up.”
Cloudskipper curled his head around to touch her nose with his own. “You have been quite kind so far with your pace.”
He looked forward, upstream back in the direction they had come. From their position, he could see the grey-green mountains that loomed over the Northern horizon of the homelands.
“Look,” Cloudskipper gestured. “We can see the mountains now that we’re not in the forest anymore. They don’t look so fancy now, but once autumn comes they will be all sorts of colors.”
Following his gesture Izzy's gaze fell upon the distant mountains eyes widening in awe. Even though summer was in full swing the mare couldn't help but admire the varying shades of greens and grays stretching towards the vibrant blue sky. It only made their time together even more special to the champagne mare. "I don't think I've ever really noticed when the mountains changed colors. It's another thing to add on my list of things to see and witness on our travels." Shaking her soaked mane out Izzy gently bumped her head against his, a content smile settling on her lips. "We're making some great progress though! If we take breaks like these ones I bet you'll feel as energetic as a foal! Or, well, close to it?" Her brow furrowed as if contemplating saying more, but after a few moments shifted her attention elsewhere.
"Have you ever tried the river plants before, Cloud?" Stepping away from Cloudskipper, Izzy dunked her head beneath the rippling surface, snagging some watery plants between her teeth and resurfacing with a snort. "Fhere. Try shome." Stretching towards the stallion Izzy bobbed her head to further express her intention. "Rfiver flants are vhery ghood and delicious."
“I have not,” Cloudskipper replied to Izzy’s question as her head disappeared underwater. He wondered if she even heard him, but had little time to think on it as she rose back above the current with a great arc of water. He took a few weightless strides toward her. He laughed as she tried to talk through the mouthful of green.
Admittedly, the river plants did not look very appetizing. Cloudskipper was not one to judge based on look alone though, and took a small mouthful. It was a pleasant surprise to find the plants were not soggy as he had initially thought. He chewed the bristly plants and swallowed. After they had gone down, Cloudskipper nodded in agreement with her comment.
“Yes they are. Better than I expected,” he said, then continued in a panic, “Not that I don’t trust your taste, or your judgment, that is. I just figured they would be more of an acquired taste. Texture. Thing.” He chuckled at his own fumbling. “I mean, they were very good.”
Cloudskipper waded closer to Izzy and pressed against her side. “Thank you for sharing with me.”
Amusement danced within the pale blue of her eyes as a small, bemused snort escaped her nose. Taking her time to chew and swallow down her portion of the plants Izzy leaned into him, cheek pressed against his. "I'm glad you enjoyed them all the same, Cloudskipper. Believe it or not I had a similar reaction when my mother first introduced me to them. I threw the biggest fit when she started pulling those out of the water and dropping them on the shoreline. I was horrified and appalled that she would dare try feeding me something that looked so gross." The memory curved the corners of her lips up in a fond smile. "Once I actually agreed to taste them though I was hooked. Anytime we came to a place where I thought there might be water plants I begged her to get me some. It became a bit of a ritual for us I guess you could call it."
Izzy brushed her nose alongside his, taking a moment to shower the stallion in warm affection. "I'm happy I got to share something as simple as this with you. Your reaction was quite funny though." Chuckling, Izzy bumped her hip playfully in to his, tone taking on a teasing note. "Maybe I should introduce you to more crazy things on our journey hm?"
The stallion smiled as he listened to Izzy talk about her mother. Nothing could take his attention away when she spoke. About her mother, about herself, about anything she found interesting. His eyes were glued to her smiling face. Cloudskipper
When she touched his nose, he sighed happily and pressed back into it. She was so warm compared to the cold water running over his flank.
“Glad you found me funny,” Cloudskipper said with a faux grumpy expression. It fell away as he continued, “I should hope you share more with me as we go. I want to learn from you just as much as I want to share with you. I hope you don’t mind me stepping out for a bit. You can stay in if you’d like but I am starting to get cold.”
Indeed, his coat shivered as the once welcome cool water became too much for him. Cloudskipper bobbed as he paddled back to the shallow side of the river. Slowly his body rose above the water, fur soaked and askew. Shaking his body did little more than send water droplets in every direction. His mane hung heavy and clung to his neck.
He laid out on the muddy shore with a content hum. The sun was quick to warm his fur, but he did not mind the heat after his swim. He turned his head back to the mare as he relaxed.
